Ghosts of the Confederacy Tour
Ghosts of the Confederacy Antebellum and Civil War: A Tour of St Matthews’ Churchyard
The Ghosts of the Confederacy haunt us still. This churchyard is a microcosm of antebellum and Civil War Hillsborough and the South. Hear stories of love and loss, heroism and death, sacrifice and pride, the end of an era and the birth of a new society. Half of the proceeds go to repairing and maintaining St. Matthew’s Cemetery headstones and monuments.
This tour is led by local historian Steve Peck. “My research on Hillsborough is a labor of love and curiosity. I majored in history at UNC-CH with a emphasis on southern history. However I am a “local historian” by avocation not profession. My research, reading and writing is aided by auditing graduate courses plus having a circle of “credentialed ” historian friends . Most of all it is a personal passion.”
